Chapter Seven
Cal had been expecting the summons ever since George Connelly rode through Rose Hill on his way back to the ranch. He’d wondered how long it would be before Susie tattled on him for spanking her. Of course, all she’d done was earn herself another spanking. He was going to tell both Rosa and Mrs. Phelps that his bride-to-be was supposed to be learning to cook and clean from them between now and the wedding. He arrived at the ranch and saw Doc’s buggy sitting there. Frowning, he went inside.
“You dared to spank my daughter!” George angrily greeted him. “The doctor is upstairs right now treating the bruises you left.”
“What bruises?” Cal asked, wondering if Susie did something to harm herself just to blame him.
The doctor came downstairs then and said, “George, why the hell did you send for me? I have three young women due to give birth at any time, and you ran me out here on a fool’s errand. There isn’t a bruise on Susan’s butt, but I would sure like to place a few there. Don’t send for me again unless it is a real emergency.”
“Are you saying that Susie isn’t injured?” George demanded.
“Not a mark on her bottom, although I have a couple of scratches from flipping her over her bed to have a look since you were so sure she was in dire straits. I wasn’t going to let maidenly modesty stop me from treating her, but there is nothing wrong with her that a good dose of hairbrush wouldn’t cure. You are blind to that girl’s faults, George, and she is making a fool of you.” With those words the doctor left, slamming the front door behind him.
“Daddy!” Susie wailed. “How could you send for that awful doctor after I said no?” She paused dramatically on the steps. “He insisted on looking at me, even though I said no, and he twisted my arm! He touched me!” she declared, sobbing.
“He was checking you for injuries, daughter, like I asked him to. You said you were bruised and I saw you limping in pain.” George was puzzled.
“Susan, I gave you a spanking; I sure as heck didn’t beat you and bruise you. Why did you lie to your father?” Cal demanded and wasn’t surprised when she got angry.
“You spanked me, Cal, and I am a grown woman! I won’t permit you to spank me like a naughty child.”
“Have you told your father the truth yet?” Cal asked, stepping forward to take her arm and give her a little shake. She merely glared at Cal and didn’t answer.
“I’ll take that as a no, and I will tell you that unless you want another spanking here and now in front of your dad, you will start talking.”
“Why are you being so mean to me, Cal? I thought you loved me!”
“I love you too much to let you continue to behave like a spoiled brat, Susan. If you want to marry me, then you are going to grow up right now, and that means telling your father the truth.
